1930s

During the 1930s the Great Depression hampered the lives of people across the world. Student life didn’t seem to reflect that, they enjoyed much of the same things as they did a decade earlier. Entertainment has been a constant for students, gymnasts and circus performers gave performances in the alumni gymnasium, musicals and plays were performed, and prom and the junior jamboree were huge events organized by students. In a 1935 issue, the Junior Jamboree featured a quartette, comedy routine, and Pledges to support the event were given. However, racism was a huge issue during the 30s. On the front page of a newspaper from 1930, the headline reads, “Black Face Fun Given By Sophs.” It was a series of entertainment including a comedy play called “The Coon Town Thirteen Club.” Other clubs such as the nature club and the St. Mary’s rifle team were created. Smoking wasn’t viewed as a health issue, so cigarette ads were ubiquitous inside these papers.
