Fits'* 7 \Js12f 7J-OI2- In the above brief statement taken from the writings of those who investigated the subject a hundred to a hundred and fifty years ago, we have the genesis of the “Old Spanish Trail” so far as it relates to the beginning of roads constructed in this country by those earnest and active missionaries in 1573 to 1600. There are trails connecting the Mexican missions with those of Texas, and in southern California that were used at this early date, but the western missionaries did not construct such roads through the wilderness as did their brethren in Florida. One reason for this was that in that country the trails passed through barren lands, while here the country was a sub-tropical dense forest.
