HIGHWAY MARKERS I I COLOR MARKERS:-, Designs Nos, I, l-A, 1-B, 1-C, 1~D & l~Ea The colors of the OLD SPANISH TRAIL are the Spanish colors Red and Yellow. White was added as a background for the lettering for clear reading at night. The dimensions and order of these bands of color are: Red 4", White 13” and Yellow 4” with the lettering 0 S T or any one of the several symbols in black on the white background. On straight roads, designs Nos, 1 and 1-A will be used alternately. Approaching a curve or corner turn, design no,1-B, 1-C or 1-E will be used. Either the ”R” or "L” shield or the curved arrow are acceptable. At the point of Deviation, Design No, 1~D will be used. Immediately around the turn a marker of No, I or 1-A should be placed in such a position that the lights of a car will strike it in turning the curve or corner. This being a confirmation marker, (plate VI) IN PAINTING these signc, paint the entire area, (20” vertically), in white. Allow this to dry thoroughly, then superimpose the coloring and lettering. After these colors have dried well, then apply a coat of cut-of-dopr varnish, PAINTS: Any standard brand of white, black and chrome yellow)are approved. Red fades and there are very few reds that will be accepted and they must be of Para base or Tuluidine base and must be guaranteed by some reputable paint manufacturer, such as the Sherwin-Williams Co,, or Pratt & Lambert, > • hi ( PAINT PRINTED SIGNS, A limited number of paint printed signs of sheet metal carrying the above colors and symbols may be used, mainly where posts are creosoted or other physical reason may make the use of metal signs preferable over painting the colors on posts. The paint printed metal signs are to be 30” X 30” in size and are to be wrapped around the posts and nailed with big headed nails or with ordinary nails with washers to prevent the heads from pulling through the metal, ct;. '... Use a nail about everj^ 4” along each edge. HEIGHT OF MARKERS on posts in the country should be about 3j> feet ' from crown of roadv/ay to center of sign. In the country there should be a color marker lust beyond the interesection of another road so that the driver can see it plainly before making the turn, if he has to turn, or on the I, v straightway if he doesn’t have to turn. There should always be a marker in sight if roads are intersecting, if long stretches of road Sr should be the rule.
