ALABAMA—77 MILES
From the Flordst lino to Mobile Bay bridge the road is still poor neighborhood type. The highway department is backward in making ibis connection from (be new bay bridge to the pavement now at the Florida line. There arc 50 mi., more or less, of travel that will vary with the weather amt with the progress of construction. The bay is crossed by bridge and causeways, 10% ml. Mobile to the Mississippi line is paved except for 11 ml. under construction, with good sand-clay detour. No ferries.
South Alabama is high and rolling. Early Irish potatoes, cucumbers and cabbages are shipped in large quantity. There are extensive orchards of pecans and satsuma oranges. Fishing and hunting fine among the waterways and coastal sections. The drinking water thru the country is soft and pure.
Mobile was founded by the French in 1711 when Fort Fouls do la Mobile was located at the site of the present city ball and armory. It takes its name from ‘‘Mauvila,” Spanish form of the name of the Indian tribe whoso valiant attack upon Do Soto so nearly destroved his expedition. Eater Mobile was under the rule of the Spaniards. While the French were at Mobile and the Spanish at Fensacola a Spanish outpost was on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay whore the bridge now lands—that spot is still called Spanish Fort.
