April 16.—(Special.)—There has been more or less criticism of Hon. Amos E. Lewis, representative from Jackson, for his opposition to the local bill that the members from Santa Rosa and Escambia counties want passed which will permit citizens of these two counties to organize a corporation for the purpose of constructing a bridge across Escambia river conectlng the two counties. The river where the proposed brldgo will cross is several miles wide. In plaining his position, Mr. Lewis said: '‘This bill was up as a local measure, but I think it is one affecting the whole state, and if all counties took the same position the bridge tolls from Pensacola to Jacksonvlle would amount to a hundred dollars. Jackson and Gadsden counties are going to build a free bridge across the Apalachicola river. We got permission from this legislature to do it, and I take the position that all bridges along the main thoroughfares should be free to the public. the federal road aid bill of 1916. provides that no funds will be given when toll bridges conect the highways.
