RESOLUTION ADOPTED BY THE TALLAHASSEE BOOSTERS’ CLUB OF TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA, JUNE 8, 1917: “Whereas, There is a movement to /lave the Old Spanish Trail Highway accepted by the United States Government as a military highway from Florida to California; and “Whereas, The United States Government has already established many rural mail routes or post roads, and some will likely be used by the army when it is necessary to mobilize troops along the southern border of this country; and ‘Whereas, It has been the custom in the various counties of the states to construct bridges several feet narrower than the width of the highway, and it would require troops to change formation and fewer cross abreast at such points, thus making confusion if haste were necessary to protect our country; therefore, be it Resolved, That the Tallahassee Boosters’ Club recommends to the United States War Department that the Government send to each board of county commissioners of the several States of the United States a request that hereafter all bridges and culverts shall be built the full width of every highway, and that change of width of bridges and culverts already constructed be made first upon all post roads or rural mail routes, highways designated as military highways, and roads connecting county-seats. And be it further Resolved, That the Secretary be instructed to have printed and sent to each commercial organization in Florida and in other States, a copy of this resolution, with the request that each such organization request the Governor of their State to urge the Government and War Department to take this action without delay.”
