APPERSON, Manager Scenically of great interest is that portion of the Old Spanish Trail which extends westward from Biloxi through the interesting city of Gulfport, along the Gulf of Mexico, through Bay St. Louis, and then westward and north across the Pearl River and out of Mississippi into Alabama. New Orleans, the Crescent City, 111 miles west of Biloxi by automobile road, is a marvelous repository of American history. In the old French quarter of the city are still standing edifices showing traces of Spanish-Moorish architecture, and in the Cabildo the documents signalizing the transfer to the United States of that empire known as “The Louisiana Territory” were signed. Here Lafayette was entertained. Here Jackson fought “the cotton-bale fight” against Paken-ham and his British regulars. Here Lafitte, the famous pirate, brought his men in to aid in the fight for American independence. The city of La Nouvelle Orleans was founded by a French governor of Louisiana, Jean Baptiste Le Moyne, Sieur de Bienville, and was named in honor of the Regent, the Due d’Orleans.
