Wool and mohair market for the sheep and goat ranches of that country. Del Rio has a fine golf course. The Pecos River bridge, 44 miles west, just completed, brings the Trans Pecos country into touch tvith East Texas and provides the way for the borderland trunkline to El Paso, connecting with the Main Line of the Old Spanish Trail at the Davis Mountains. This bridge is four miles south of the Southern Pacific bridge, long noted for its high steel span. Sloping approaches were blasted down the cliffs for two and a half miles on each side for the bridge.

Southwest Texas is a tcild and rugged land, fashioned by Nature in many mysterious forms. Frio Canyons, with their perpendicular walls, hold some wonderful story of past ages. Springs gush from the rock to refresh the traveler and feed the river. The bed of the river is a broad, level rock plaza that today constitutes the roadway thru the canyons for ranchman and tourist. Eagle Pass is the central gateway to Mexico. A modern little city, it claims more miles of paved streets than any town its size in the country. Excellent hotels and amusements both sides of the river. Across the Rio Grande is Piedras Ncgras, Coahuila, Mexico, a city of 20,000 people. Within a radius of 100 miles south is to be found the best hunting and fishing in the Southicest—Chamber of Commerce.

San Antonia la Bandera and on into Kerrville. where it joins the Main Line of the Old Spanish Trail, From San Antonio for 27 miles there is a fine surfaced road. Then come roads of varying character, but dragged and improved.
The Bandera country is a section of scenic attraction. Bandera Paji is noted for two famous battles. Long before the Revolutionary War. the Spanish were colonizing San Antonio an*l establishing the missions. Many Indian tribes peaceably accepted the ministrations of Mission Fathers end helped build the missions and develop the irrigation and other works of the ambitious communal life fostered by the Spaniards. Apaches lived in the Banderc hills, and jreqncntly raided the San Antonio colony. The King of Spain detailed troops, and General Bandera fought a bloody three-day's battle and the Apaches were driven westward. In later years the Apaches burned their name deep in the cnnals of the far west.
A hundred years later, IS 10, when Texas was a Republic, Captain Jack Hays and a band of Rangers fought another bloody battle at the Pass with the Comanchcs. That, too. become a notable day in the perilous game of
C°tween * Bwdera and Center Point is old Camp Verde, where, when Jefferson Davis was Secretary of War, his experiment in using camels for this country was tried out. Their soft feet could not stand the rocky soil.
