L L Harris. CHAIRMAN OFThC OOARO NEW YORK OFFICE: 112 W. 3Eth STREET H.H Ochs. PRESIDENT C.C.WlTCHELL, SECY-TREAS The WolFF & Marx Co. DEPARTMENT STORE Sxm (Jntonio, cjexctf>, Sept. 7th 1933. Mr. H. B. Ayres, Box 301 Gunter Hotel, San Antonio, Vex., Dear Sir: We offer the following information obtained by the manufacturers from a search of Preble's History of the Flags of the United States of xiinerica, in a section headed "The Symbols, Standards and Banners of Ancient and modern nations". \\f& l Sib On the accession of Charles V to the Kingdom of Spain he introduced the Burgundian flag, the red raguled______- saltire on a white ground, which was to some extent used for 250 years. Ships of the Armada, in 1588, bore the Burgundian cross. In a series of maps of the actions, preserved in the British Museum, the Spanish fleet is as distinctly marked by the red saltire as the English by the red cross. . Ax,*- It was further found that this flag, as described by Preble, as flag 438, page 342 of Flags of the World, published by the national Geographic Magazine. It came out as their Oct. 1917 number but this number was bound up and undoubtedly can be located in all Public Libraries. The flag is a white flag with a red rgguled cross of the Spanish Bourbon but to each end of the cross waz added a coat of arms. This flag was carried by the Spanish troops in the War of Mexican Independence, and one of the original flags is among other relics of that timo in the museum ai Mexico City. Undoubtedly, this is the flag you are looking for, or at least this is the flag of Charles V, jaeriod^1520-1540? The Spanish flag of 1703-1824 when Spain controlled Texas is a white flag with a design, that is coat of arms, etc., as illustrated on the sketch of six flags Remember theAlamo which we have sent you. This flag is also illustrated and described in the Flags of the 'World as 1145, among the flags of the world, two hunired years ago. This flag is described on page 481. The description gives the date of this flag as about 1700, whereas the other flag was in 1500. Very truly yours, THE WOLFF & MARX CO. J Dh
