Olive St,, Los Angeles, Cal, ''V\ Dec* 13» 1917 • My dear Stewart:- I have been mighty busy all season and still am but there is something of importance that 1 must report to you right noAv. The Automobile Club of Southern California is the best in the U.S. and has done and is continuing to do wonderful things for this and other states. It has the confidence of the public here and throughout the whole country. .The Auto Club of America is a piratical outfit that is a detriment to any community they visit and I have had many cases of their defrauding the public reported to me. It is alleged they misrepresent grossly and practically cheat those they do business with in many places. Their last stunt is described in the attached letter. I understand they intend mafking one of their campaigns down through the South and if they do I cannot see where anything but harm will result from it. L. G. Adams had one experience withthem when he v/as here and I suggest that you call him up and ask him about it. LUCIEN LYONS VICE-PRESIDENT WALTER PARKER W. A. SCHULER W. E. DERMODY TEXAS HOMER D. MATTHEWS. VICE-PRESIDENT MALCOLM A. FRASER NEW MEXICO FRANCIS E. LESTER. VICE-PRESIDENT H. A. LANE ARIZONA I Think it the duty of the Association to send out a warning in the shape of a letter informing organizations that the Auto Club of America is in no way connected with us and that v/e do not approve of their methods and that they are not welcome on this Highway. They have no affiliation of connection with the Automobile Club of America of New York which is the oldest in the U.S. but appear to have adopted a similar name for deception. You need mention no names in your letter of yo\xr informants but state that it is alleged or that you are reliably informed or something like that. HARRY LOCKE. VICE-PRESIDENT WARREN MAC ARTHUR HARRY WELCH JOHN F. MYERS CALIFORNIA ED. FLETCHER. VICE-PRESIDENT Such a letter sent 'with the request that press and'^any other publicity be given it will help to protect the business interests along our route from being deceived and taken advantage of by these grafters for that is exactly what they are Information of that kind should be sent to the commercial clubs and chambers of commerce and automobile clubs as far west as Phoenix, Ariz and also to San Antonio and Galveston and Corpus Christi. And it should he done right now. I'm going to write to you again real soon, Stewart. With the compliments of the season, I am. Very sincerely OLD SPANISH TRAIL PALMER PILLANS, PRC3IDCNT STEWART A.
