Snn Antonio, Texas May 5th, 1925. Mr. Goke R. Stevenson, OST Vice-President, Junction, Texas. Dear Mr. Stevenson: The enclosed letter is self explanatory. It is going to all the Texas editors. The Jefferson Davis Memorial Highway name is applied to the highway from Orange thru San Antonio, Del Rio to El Paso. This will not only destroy the Old Spanish Trail as a nationally known transcontinental route but it undoubtedly will destroy the idea of any accepted transcontinental route for other states will not accept the Jefferson Davis naming, and of still more importance it will practically destroy the route thru Junction and Ft. Stockton. I have been to Austin and they apparently intend (if the peoole allow them) to build the Del Rio route to El Paso and the Bankhead from Ft. Worth to El Paso. I have not started on the West Texas trip because no funds have been available from that section. In addition, this renaming business has involved me for the last ten days. I will, however, with my own funds get in the oar in the next day or two and go thru West Texas because of the friendship I have for that section. I believe however you people should make it emphatically known that the Old Spanish Trail must be preserved and that you people thru there must have your route opened. I found no interest at Austin in tyying to find solutions to the problems between Sonora and Kent. If you people do not get busy to fight your own battles or else help us with fluids to do some fighting there is only one end in sight and that is the loss of the transcontinental route. Sincerely yours. H. B. Ayres, . OST Managing Director. Tim/b enc. ed. It.
