The Old Trail Roads under the spirit, as to how civilization advanced into the west, has taken tremendous strides forward in settling this problem of the nation, in accordance with the principles of justice and right, and the Trail Roads now loom before our vision with a significance of supreme and most vital importance in our national history.
Formerly very little attention was paid to the National Trail Roads until the Daughtcis of the American Revolution began the propaganda for the preservation of these historic highways, “linked not by accident but by the hand of fate into a continuous route of travel from the infant settlements on the Atlantic coast to the Mississippi and into the great west.
The King’s Highway, Camino Real, or Old San Antonio Road across Texas was marked out by natures engineers, the Indians and the buffalo and wherever the Indian and the buffalo have marked out a road, it is the best lino of transportation, the best way of least resistance.
Tho King’s Highway is found by actual demonstration, as surveyed by-the State’s appropriation to be the Natural highway across the State, as it has fewer grades, shorter distances and a nautral road bed.
But better still than all this, the fact the King’s Highway, Camino Real or Old San Antonio Road represents “'milestones of heroism” in our Texas history. Over it we can trace the political ancestry of our State’s history.
Tho French, the Spanish, the Mexican and the American propagated religious and political history across this trail, and from this knowledge of facts we can trace the control of our Texas lands.
From the Spanish diaries of Morfi and DeMcziers in 177S, from the land-marks and distances recorded by them in traveling the road as “Camino Real,” “Royal Highway,” the road was surveyed on the back of the land in connection with the field notes of those counties along the road called “Old San Antonio Ro-1 ”
