I wish to express to you our joy upon receipt of the invitation to the reception in your honor to be given by Mrs. henry Drought on the occasion of your decoration by the Spanish Crown of the Royal Order of Isabel la Catolica.
I am sure that if San Diego v/ere a kingdom that it would be glad to bestow upon you its highest degree of knighthood for the service that you have rendered directly to it by your untiring efforts and successful completion of the work of building the Old Spanish Trail from St. Augustine, Florida to San Diego, California.
You may always be assured of our kindly feeling and high regard for your ability and generalship of this great project. My personal regret is that I, and the members of the San Diego-California Club, cannot personally grasp your hand v/hen you are to be honored by a foreign Crown.
