To the motorist rolling smoothly westward there may be no special import to the words ‘‘Apache” and “Chiricahua.” But the Chiri-cahua Apache was the most formidable fighting man of all the American Indians, “the tiger of his species,” as General George Cook termed him. Capable of herculean exertions as a runner and mountain-climber, he did not know what the words fatigue or fear meant. Cunning, he never exposed himself to danger if it could be helped. Brave, he fought to the death when cornered. Cruel, his record is one of such ghastly crime that history shudders at the bare recital.
