I told him that I was absolutely opposed to it myself and that I didn’t have the nerve to ask Judge McCrcry to make a special exception for a commissioners court that had unanimously fought the bond issue from the start and had refused to comply with the Commissioners’ request after the bonds were voted, and I advised him to not even mentibn such a ridiculous Proposition when he went before the Commission for a hearing. I put Judge McCrory wise and the Judge said that if Jim V/eils County was the only way that was possible to get to the Valley and that if there wasn’t another five men in the county who would accept the office of Judge and Commissioners that he would recommend a modification of the contract to comply with the present court’s wishes, but didn"t feel it was necessary to giake this concession because it was an easy matter to go around the county,and the five men I had selected for the place would be a decidedly better commissioners court any way.
If I thought it advlseable to stand pat he would certairly do so. Judge Mullins afterward told me that his court had instructed him to go ahead, and sign the regular contract if they couldn’t get it modified, 3o the poor fellow was almost embarrassed when he sneaked up before the Commission and told them that his court had re-considered, the matter and wanted to acdept the proposition tendered them, and when he was asked the direct question,if his court was ready to sign the contract vltheesP maintenance, he said "yes*1. Then they told him all right they were ready to do business with him, and sent him back to Kendall*3 office to be fixed up.
Tom Odem,from San Patricio County, enjoined the special commission of the Mathis district. The case was tried and a permanent injunction issued. This threw the handling of that district back into the hands of the commissioners court. And Collins and the County Judge were before the Commission asking for aid and .it was granted, so you see there are/two of my serious problems,that hare cost the association probahlyj$30Q that seems to be worked out.
My big problem now is how to get thru Live Oak County. I am putting the proposition up to them for a farewell tr-ihl. Expect to have their answer shortly.
Am going to have to put on another bond issue for Cameron County just as soon as I can get to it. They seem to be about ready to tackle the job whenever I am ready now, and I think I have gotten by with some very good diplomacy with Mayor Cole and the other opposition and I now have the assurance of the co-operation of Mayor Cole and his entire bunch, and I have gotten along so well with this that I am trying to get the Mayor to father the proposition himself. Thi3 will give us a solid line-up without opposition. I believe that Cole will do just what I want him to do by the time I get my plans all worked out.
It would be a county wide proposition and will complete the OST in to Brownsville and the Border Highway from Pt. Isabel via Brownsville to the Hidalgo County line with a tourist loop from Pt, Isabel to San Benito and Harlingen. Some program I want to tell you, but a dandy good one.
