All through this portion of Florida the epic procession of the Old World visionaries wended its way centuries ago. Motorists of the present day traversing these four-centuried paths of the original Spanish explorers and their followers are passing through a land of memory and romance, of highest endeavor and most sordid scheming. It was a strange blending of the great and base, which showed how low man’s nature might stoop on the one hand, and how high and clear the spiritual flame might burn in the breath of a man of God.
Tallahassee the capital city of Florida, is a shipping point for cotton, corn, tobacco, fruits and vegetables. Tradition says that the Spaniards, about 1638, fortified a hill near the present site of Tallahassee during a war with the Apalachee Indians. About 1818 most of the Indians were driven out of this region and a settlement was made by the whites and in 1824 Tallahassee was chosen by the United States Government to be the capital of the Territory of Florida.
