b '■any of us have been associating on research-studies, and I have encouraged specializing on definite phases and lator to weave our data together into a more complete whole. When the time corses T can finance the organized cooperative work, and also the publication of all studies that shall be duly approved. And when we can begin to tie in the history students along the Old Spanish Trail, there are others, not students, who will help finance the work......,1 believe finance it liberally. Under Studies in Progress the broad field now being explored will be noted; and yet this list is steadily expanding. V/e lajst organize intelligently if these studies are to be carried thru. Under Associates 1 have Hated names of persons that have helpfully cooperated with me, and the special studies in which they are interested. There are others not listed, and others scattered about with whom T have contacted by correspondence and in other minor ways. Gone of ‘hese I have helped with maps, date and suggestion at quite some cost to rae in time and money, "'e have talked and planned how we nay efficiently coordinate all effort. Under Plans and Policies I have outlined loosely the course we have been heading into. It will serve here as a guide to more mature thinking. Under San Jose "ission (book in preparation) I have outlined that work, by chapter headings; this represents extensive research and writing and conference, but as in all Spanish history there are many natural questions still unanswered. Yet T have now data, photos, etchings, and written material which, if published, would give San Antonio more definite data than anything heretofore published. I prefer, however, that this should pass thru the mill of cooperative criticism and helpfulness. (There are others in San Antonio with '!o. in similar condition.) San -lose Mission is the child of Father "argil. San Jose is the best example for study and preservation of the San Antonio mission group. The wise handling of the Gan Jose history and its associated phases will (or should) lead to esaco reclaiming and preservation of the other mission properties. In addition. Father "argil's name is to be presented in 1956 for sanctification. The Texas Spanish story built around the San Jose ?Tission will therefore give a better perspective of the San Antonio works and serve gnnd excellently to focus'public mind on tee old history. The chapter headings of this one "work" show how the study of Spanish history inevitably spreads into broad fields, if anything like a correct picture is to be presented.
