Dear Mrs. Drought I regret that it will be impossible for me to attend the reception to be given in honor of Mr. Harral Ayres. I assure you, however, that I deeply appreciate the invitation, and I am glad to see that Mr. Ayres' untiring and unselfish efforts have at last been rewarded. I am sorry for the misunderstanding that had arisen between Mr. Ayres and certain parties in this State, which had caused some unpleasantness, but I personally have always had a very high regard and appreciation for Mr. Ayres' work. Therefore, I wish you would extend to Mr. Ayres my sincere congratulations and assure him that he has my whole-hearted confidence, which is best reflected by the signal honor, that he is to receive at your home on Tuesday Evening April 29th.
