Dear Mrs. Drought
I regret that it will be impossible for me to attend the reception to be given in honor of Mr. Harral Ayres. I assure you, however, that I deeply appreciate the invitation, and I am glad to see that Mr. Ayres' untiring and unselfish efforts have at last been rewarded.
I am sorry for the misunderstanding that had arisen between Mr. Ayres and certain parties in this State, which had caused some unpleasantness, but I personally have always had a very high regard and appreciation for Mr. Ayres' work.
Therefore, I wish you would extend to Mr. Ayres my sincere congratulations and assure him that he has my whole-hearted confidence, which is best reflected by the signal honor, that he is to receive at your home on Tuesday Evening April 29th.
I hope that some way will be found to maintain the Old Spanish Trail Organization, for even though the material work of construction has been practically accomplished, we must realize that there are a number of competitive routes, which
