DIRECTORS NOT PRESENT NO OFFICIAL ACTION NOMINATION OP NEW DIRECTORS October 15, 1929 The adjourned, session oi' the Old Spanish Trail Association was called to order at the San Diego Chamber of Commerce, October 16, at nine o'clock. Harral Ayres presiding. Mr. Ayres reported first with the printed final report ana audit of the Executive board, delivered to all present. Secondly, with an oral statement that the work undertaken thirteen years ago to establish and improve the Old Spanish Trail from Florida to California was essentially completed, and that the question of paving and further improvement was now well in hand by each of the eight state highway departments. Following the introductory remarks from tne Chairman, Mr. 0. H. L. Wernicke, from Pensacola, Mr. Wees, from Beaumont, Texas, and Mr. Thayer, from Clearwater, Florida, stated that due to the lack of directors of the Old Spanish Trail Association, the meeting must be conducted in an informal manner and that no official action could be taken. The statement made by these gentlemen was concurred in by Mr. Hal Hobson, who officially represented the National Highway Committee of the San Diego-Calitornia Club and the San Diego Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Ayres stated that the election of new officers and directors, and suggested policies for building up travel was the order of business. An open discussion followed. Tne conclusion was reached that the next important step was to complete the marking of tne highway. uther travel development policies discussed were the continuance of the TRAVELOG and the issuance of a wall map and other general travel development plans. Mr. Ayres stated that it was nis judgment that the National Associst ion should not think of an advertising fund but that advertising funds would and should be handled by the localities subscribing such funds. The National Association should address itself to such things as marking, general publicity, and other general works not easily handled by the localities. The sense of the meeting was that a vice-president for eacn state (two for Texas on account of its long mileage) be elected and proceed through tnem to complete the new board of Directors and to formulate future policies.
