San Antonio, Texas. January 31st, 1322 Mr. H. B. Ayres, Mobile, Alabama. Dear Mr. Ayres:- I have received a letter from Mr. Davidson at Lafayette, Louisiana, in which he promises to do his best with the mayor and'and chief of police so that a repetition of the Yaun matter will not occur any more. I have sent a copy of Ur. Davidson's letter to McDonald in order that he might now that we are after them in regard to this. I hope that the bonds have carried in Alabama and know the people arc satisfied with the work you have been able to give them for the past month. V/e have had nothing but rain here for the last two weeks and while Baird went out and collected about v250,at the same time we need sunshine and good weather.bad; it has been just like pulling teeth to get a dime from anybody. However, this same kind of weather seems to be going on all over the United States and about all there is left for us to do is to keep trying. Baird has gone to Atascosa County today but returns tomorrow and will go after the money again. "e are expecting some "High Mogul" from Washington in here Saturday morning and I am leaving him to the Chamber of Commerce and Mr. Coin and am positive they will be able to impress upon his mind that the Old Spanish Trail is one of the best organised highway propositions in the United States. Am glad to know that your cola is better, and in regard to your return to San Antonio I feel you can do lots more good over in that section than you can here. The fact of the business is I feel you and I should get into New Orleans somewhere between the 10th and 15th of February and have a few talks with Fleming and others enterested in order that we can be able to get the Louisiana people with us good and strong. I don't think that either of us should go there alone as it will require a lot of heavy work and it will possibly push us to the limit in order to do things as we should. You think tlis over and let me know what you think of it, and in the m .an time I will try and get hold of some money somehow to make the trip. No further news at present FBJ:AH •A I Very truly yours.
