To the Honorable Highway Commission of Texas
Gentlemen,-
We, the undersigned citizens of Schulenburg, respectfully ask that you reconsider your changing the name of the "old Spanish Trail" to that of the "Jefferson Davis Memorial Highway."
The Old Spanish Trail Association was organized by the citizens of the states of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Hew Mexico, Arizona and California to promote find develop the construction and beautifying of an interstate highway from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans.
The work of the organization has been successful in getting their plans carried out, and has become nationally known and recognized. Its purpose is to co-operate with the various Highway Commissions of the states through which it passes, to create sentiment for the further improvement of those sections v/hich are not built to standard of the type of construction necessary to carry its traffic, to compile the historical features, to advertise the opportunities along its course, to beaiitify it, so that it may become a model for other highways. This work can only be carried out through organized effort and co-operation with the Highway Commissions.
In choosing the name "Old Spanish Trail", the organization fully considered the matter in every way, and decided upon that name as more completely representing the actual features of the historical routes which it parallels and intersects, with due consideration to all states through which it passes.
