Counties, cities, and minor civil divisions.—In the tables which follow (Tables 2 to 6), the population of Alabama is shown by counties, election precincts, cities, and incorporated towns, with some comparative figures from previous censuses. Cities of 10,000 or more.—There are 14 cities in the State which had a population of 10,000 or more in 1930. Table 2 shows for these cities the population at each census for which figures are available, together with the increase or decrease in each decade. Birmingham, the largest city, first became an important industrial center between 1880 and 1890. Its growth has been very rapid during each decade of its history. Bessemer and Fairfield are within the metropolitan area of Birmingham and have shared the growth of that city. Mobile, on Mobile Bay, retains its position as the second city in Alabama, closely followed by Montgomery, the capital. Decatur and Phenix City have entered this population class since 1920 by virtue of consolidations and annexations. Fairfield and Huntsville also first attained a population of 10,000 or more between 1920 and 1930. 3 INCREASE OVER PRECEDING CENSUS Population ______________________ Number Percent 2,010.248 2HS.074 12.7 2,348,174 210,081 0.8 2,138,093 309,300 10.9 1,828,097 315,290 20.8 1,513,401 250,890 19.9 1,202.505 205,513 2G. 0 990,992 32.791 3.4 901,201 192,578 25.0 771,023 180,807 30.0 590,750 2S 1.229 90.9 309,527 IS 1,020 142.0 127,901 .....................
