FLORIDA POPULATION—FLORIDA o' NUMBER AND DISTRIBUTION OF INHABITANTS Population of the State.—Florida was organized as a Territory in 1S22, and was admitted to the Union as the twenty-seventh State in March, 1845. Its population on April 1, 1930, according to the Fifteenth Census, was 1,468,211, which represents an increase of 499,741, or 51.6 per cent, as compared with the population on January 1, 1920. The total land area of the State, as shown in Table 3, is 54,S61 square miles. The average number of inhabitants per square mile in 1930 was 26.8, as compared with 17.7 in 1920. Table 1 shows the population of Florida from 1830, the year in which the Territory of Florida was first separately enumerated, to 1930, together with the increase during each decade. Counties and minor civil divisions.—In the tables which follow (Tables 2 to 6) the population of Florida is shown by counties, election precincts, and incorporated cities, towns, and villages, with some comparative figures from previous censuses. Cities of 10,000 or more.—There are 14 cities in Florida which had a population of 10,000 or more in 1930. Table 2 shows for these cities the population at each census for which figures are available, together with the increase during each decade. Jacksonville, the largest city, has a population of 129,549, which represents an increase of 37,991, or 41.5 per cent, over its population in 1920. Miami, the second city in the State, has a population of 110,637, representing an increase of SI,066, or 274.1 per cent, since 1920. Tampa, with 101,161 inhabitants, is now the third city in Florida.
