3 from tile west( and finally afterwards tiiat on the north side). He also found another in front of the trunnions.-- Its aim is towards the shore directly to the east, and it guards the wall of the fort on the nortn side -- In it there is a stairway by which they climb to another cavalier above .where a sentinel keeps watch at night. From this cavalier the entire wood, and the sea and the shore, and the bar ma.y be seen. A part of the land is visible from a high sentry box that was above the entire cavalier, where a sentinelkeeps watch day and night.--- The visitor then left this cavalierand went forward through the fort in whose v/all on the north side he found another small postern gate ,lor the purpose above mentioned. " small river From that early map I snowed you the cano of Seloy was one league from the bar and south, the fort in 1574 by tue account of Dr.Caceres was a half a league from the bar. From this description of the fort the city was south of the fort and not the bar so it could not have been on ITorthBeach nor on Anastasia Island as the woods were nortn and 'west. Drakes map agrees with this description even to showing three cannon firing at the bar,and the town is directly south of the fort . I have copied this to show you the dixection of the early trails. In 1598 the Governor Gonzales Ganso de Mendez writes in a report "I have built a wooden bridge over a morass which is close to this city" In 1702 a governor "sent a runner to Apalache in order that Captain Roque Perez should embark there in a sloop with sufficient forces to get to Havana and ask for help and that Ensign Diego de Florencia should go to Pensacola and Mobile to the French people ox Balizada to ask them also for assistance in men." The English roads seem to have followed the trails. The road from Picolata to the Duval County line by the St.John’s River will be more beautiful than the road by the railroad but it will be an entirely new road and not historic.
