San Antonio, Texas March 7th, 1929. The following telegram just received, HARRAL AYRES GUNTER HOTEL SAN ANTONIO TEX WORKING UP SAINT AUGUSTINE MOTORCADE TO START FROM SAN DIEGO STOP WHAT DATE MUST WE ARRIVE IN ELPASO WHERE FLETCHER INFORMS ME YOU WILL TAKE CHARGE STOP RUSH DAILY SCHEDULE AND ITINERARY YOU WILL FOLLOW STOP SHORT TIME PREVENTS DOING MUCH BUT WILL DO ALL WE CAN RUSSEL H MILES SAN DIEGO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. Last year the Californians left San Diego with a motorcade of 27 cars and reached Memphis, Term., v/ith 635 cars and 1598 delegates and bands and groups of singers to organize the Broadway of America connecting New York and San Diego. We have been working to make Californians understand travel can henceforth be routed by Mobile or New Orleans to the west and make quicker driving time this way. The Old Spanish Trail monument dedication and Ponce de Leon celebration at St. Augustine April 2,3, 4 gave us our opportunity to try to tie this Old Spanish Trail country together for the common good instead of the East and the West pulling against each other. We are now working out the schedules and stops. Not much time. Will keep you advised. Will you people put cars in the motorcade and help celebrate the Old Spanish Trail achievements and prove to the world this Old Spanish Trail country is open and inviting? A business session will be held at St. Augustine to plan for a national convention and formulate future policies and plans. My term of office, and the terms of the other directors, expire. We want the Old Spanish Trail people now to come together and make their own plans for the future. Push publicity. OLD SPANISH TRAIL ASSOCIATION GUNTER HOTEL Harral Ayres, Managing Director.
