St. Mary's Parish, in which Berwick is situated, is the land of “Evangeline,” the heroine of Longfellow’s beautiful poem. The romance of the banished settlers and the tragedy of their leaving home and country behind them is touchingly portrayed in the poet’s immortal lines; and the little wayside grocery called “Evangeline Store” is a quaint suggestion of the journey into this country, long ago, of the heartbroken pilgrims from Grand Pre.
