9 NEW MEXICO POPULATION—NEW MEXICO NUMBER AND DISTRIBUTION OF INHABITANTS Population of the State.—The Territory of New Mexico was organized in 1850 from the area now comprising the greater parts of-the States of New Mexico and Arizona, together with small portions of Colorado and Nevada. In 1S63, with the organization of the Arizona Territory, the boundaries of New Mexico were established as at present. In January, 1912, New Mexico was admitted to the Union as the forty-seventh State. Its population on April 1, 1930, according to the Fifteenth Census, was 423,317, which represents an increase of 62,967, or 17.5 per cent, as compared with the population on January 1, 1920. The total land area of the Slate, as shown in Table 3, is 122,503 square miles. The average number of inhabitants per square mile in 1930 was 3.5, as compared with 2.9 in 1920. Table 1 shows the population of New Mexico from 1S50, the year in which the Territory of New Mexico was first separately enumerated, to 1930, together with the increase or decrease during each decade. Table 1.—Population of New Mexico: 1S50 to 1930 [A minus sign (—) denotes decrease] 1 Total for 18C0 Includes population (0,482) of Arizona County, organized as tho Territory of Arizona in 1SG3. The population of tho remainder of Now Mexico Territory in I860 was thus S7.034. Making allowance for this reduction in area, the total for 1S70 would represent an incrcaso of 4,840, or 5.0 per cent, as compared with 1SG0. No population was returned for Arizona County in 1850. Counties and minor civil divisions.—In the tables which follow (Tables 2 to 6) the population of New Mexico is shown by counties, election precincts, cities, towns, and villages, with some comparative figures from previous censuses. Cities of 10,000 or more.—There are three cities in the State which had a population of 10,000 or more in 1930. Table 2 shows for these cities the population at each census for which figures are available, together with the increase or decrease during each decade. Albuquerque, the largest city in New Mexico, has a population of 26,570, which represents an increase of 11,413, or 75.3 per cent, over its population in 1920. Santa Fe, the capital and second city in the State, has 11,176 inhabitants and its increase during the past decade was 54.4 per cent. Roswell, the third city, has 11,173 inhabitants and its increase was 58.9 per cent. 19700—30 3 INCREASE OVER PRECEDING CENSUS census year Population ------------------- Number 1030...................-.............................................. 423,317 G2,9C7 17.5 1020................................................................... 300,350 33,019 10.1 1910.................................................................. 327,301 131,991 07.0 1000................................................................... 195,310 35,028 21.9 1S90.................................................................. 1C0.2S2 40,717 34.1 1880.................................................................. 119,505 27,091 30.1 1870.................................................................... 91,874 >-1,012 1-1.8 1800.................................................................. > 93,510 31,909 51.9
