"Jimmie” Snee of Baton Rouge was elected by acclamation as commander of the American Legion, department of Louisiana, at the final business session of the state legion convention today held in the House of Representatives at the state house. Lafayette was chosen as the convention city for 1929. Other department officers elected, in addition to Mr. Snee, were Dr. Claude Martin of Welsh, vice-commander; the Rev. M. W. Lockhart of Eaton Rouge, chaplain; Charles S. Boudreaux, New Orleans, sergeant-at-arms. Delegates to the national convention at San Antonio will include Mr. Snee, the newly elected commander; Charles E. McKenzie of Monroe, retiring commander; C. J. Bourg of New Orleans, state adjutant; Dan W. Spurlock, national committeeman, and also Nathan Davis of New Iberia and John D. Truce Reached in Canada Rum Stock Seizures STAINS ANALYZED IN CO-ED MURDER DECLARED RUST Discovery ‘ Weakens Case Against Suspect Held in Cri ime (By Ths Associated Press) Chicago, Aug. 11.—Circumstantial I evidence on which police were seek- j ing to incriminate John Burke, an I "odd-jobs” laborer, for the slaying j of Mi33 Jennie Constance, a -lege teacher, was weakened today when a chemical analysis of stains on Burke’s clothes disclosed they were caused by rust and not blood. The analysis was made by Coroner’s Chemist W. D. McNally who reported his finding after examining a stained coat police discovered a sewer drain in the basement quarters Burke occupied. The police sought the analysis on the theory the stains were probably made by blood. The iron pipe used by the slayer in beating Miss Constance to death and several other articles remain to be analyzed. Burke, who lives in the neighborhood where the slaying occurred last Tuesday night, has been in custody suspect since Wednesday, has steadfastly denied any guilt connection with the crime. Miss Constance, head of the Eng-lish department at Bradley Institute, Peoria, 111., was attacked and slain while walking home from Northwestern university library in mslon.
