CA«\iMo Ak -----/UMico October, 1932 NEW MEXICO Page 5 Thoughts and Things DO YOU know THE SMELL of A FIRE of PlRON WOOD and THE TASTE of TROUT BOILED over it HAVE YOU felt THE TANG of THE COOLNESS of THE MOUNTAINS as THE SUN drops behind A WESTERN peak AND DAYLIGHT changes QUICKLY INTO night AND THE warmth OF A campfire IS VERY welcome or HAVE YOU ever yearned TO SADDLE a SURE-FOOTED mountain pony AND PACK another AND JUST start out OVER TRAILS that MAY LEAD anywhere OR NOWHERE and NOT CARE very much EITHER WAY just so THEY LEAD up AND UP through PINE AND spruce trees AND INTO rocky canons WHERE A silvery TROUT STREAM chuckles AND LAUGHS and HERE AND there RESTS ITSELF in DEEP AND quiet pools WHERE LURK speckled AND RAINBOW trout HUNGRY FOR your fly OR HAVE you ever WATCHED A blue MOUNTAIN PEAK suddenly TURN TO pink THEN GOLD and then TO A most DAZZLING WHITE as THE RISING sun STRIKES ITS bonnet ' OF SNOW and is THROWN BACK at you AND HAVE you ever WATCHED THE startled WILD DEER throw up HIS HEAD and GIVE YOU the ONCE OVER and then DASH OFF thru THE TREES and UNDERBRUSH OR heard THE RUSH of grouse THRU THE timber OR THE wailing OF A bobcat ON A quiet night UNDER GLISTENING stars OR THE cowboys’ CHANT AS they RIDE NIGHTHERD and LULL THEIR restless CHARGES WHILE the LIGHTNING FLASHES in THE DISTANT hills AND THE roll OF THE thunder comes RUMBLING DOWN into THE VALLEY well IF YOU have YOU'LL KNOW how A FELLOW feels when HE GETS a letter THAT SAYS “ c’mon out” AND CANT I THANK you. —Author unknown.
