Santa Fe, New Mexico October 9th.1988 Mr. Harral Ayres, Old. Spanish Trail Ass'n. Ounter Hotel, San Antonio.Texas. Dear Mr. Ayres ; Yours of the E8th. ult. received. Enclosed/iind the design of the sun symbol sek& as adopted'by the Highway Department for their road signs and for a proposed state flag design. This design was found on a piece of very old (prehistoric) pottery at the Indian village of Zia, fifty miles west of here. There are many sun symbols but this appealed to us because of its being "different" and expressive. In the original on the pottery there was a crude face shown by eyes and nose, no mouth. I am also enclosing a pamphlet distributed by a local merchant, showing some of the convential symbols as used now hy the Indians, some of which however are very old, but still in use. Because the lines of the Zia sun symbol were drawn "free hand" they lacked that stiffness of the design as now used, yet they were by no means "crude,"just a bit out of a straight line, the circle very well drawn. If I can be of any other help to you I shall be glad to be at your service. °incerely yours P.S. V/ay back, thirty years ago I used to live in San Antonio and knew many people there, some of whom may still be alive. At 724 South Flores St. there is ALWAYS a welcome awaiting me.
